We understand that many patients feel a little uncertain about dental X-rays. You’re not alone—questions about radiation exposure are very common. The good news is that dental X-rays are extremely safe, and they play a vital role in helping us protect your smile.

Why We Take Dental X-Rays
X-rays give us a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums that we cannot visually see. They help us find small cavities, check the health of your roots and jawbone, and detect issues before they become painful or more complicated to treat. Simply put, they allow us to take care of your oral health in the most accurate and preventive way possible.
How Safe Are Dental X-Rays?
Modern dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation—in fact, the amount is comparable to what you might experience during a short airplane flight or a day outdoors. We use digital X-ray technology, which further reduces radiation exposure compared to traditional film methods.
To keep you even safer, we provide lead aprons and thyroid collars when needed, and we take X-rays only when they’re truly necessary for your care.
From the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC): Their radiation doses “fact sheet” indicates that an intra-oral dental X-ray is about 0.005 mSv (i.e., 5 µSv) in dose. Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Personalized for You
Every patient is unique, and so is every care plan. How often you need X-rays depends on your dental history, current oral health, and risk factors. Children and those with ongoing dental concerns or high risk for having cavities (ie for those with dry mouth) may need them a bit more often.
If you’re pregnant or have specific concerns, please let us know—we’re always happy to adjust your care and explain your options.
A Healthy Smile Starts with Prevention
Dental X-rays are a safe, important part of preventive care. They help us catch small problems early, saving you time, discomfort, and expense down the road. Our goal is always to provide gentle, thoughtful care that keeps you comfortable and confident in every step of your dental journey.
