The Liberal government has introduced a new dental-care benefit to cover dental expenses for children under 12 in low- and modest-income families.
The target implementation date for the Canada Dental Benefit is December 1, 2022, and the program would cover expenses retroactive to October 1, 2022.
The Canada Dental Benefit provides direct, up-front tax-free payments up to $650 per child per year for families with adjusted net income under $90,000 per year and without dental coverage.
- $650 would be provided for each eligible child if the family’s adjusted net income is under $70,000.
- $390 would be provided for each eligible child if the family’s adjusted net income is between $70,000 and $79,999.
- $260 would be provided for each eligible child if the family’s adjusted net income is between $80,000 and $89,999.
Anyone with an income of under $70,000 annually won’t have to make co-payments.
Based on the government’s initial announcement, the new benefit will cover kids under 12 years old in 2022 and then expand to include anyone under 18, as well as seniors and people living with a disability in 2023.
To qualify, families will need to apply through the Canada Revenue Agency and provide evidence for the following:
- They have booked a dental appointment for their kids
- They don’t have private insurance
- They will have out-of-pocket expenses for the appointment
Families will also have to keep their receipts in case they are audited.
